Writing software is an inherently political action. We automate tasks that people can do manually, sometimes
making them billions of times faster. We are responsible for any harm caused by our projects. To this end, this page
includes a list of things we won't do, as well as a note if we did them in the past. It's important to be open about our mistakes.
Things I won't do
- Work for clients that promote the deaths of other humans, such as militaries and some governments.
- Work that requires us to hide evidence of crimes, such as classified work.
- Work for organisations that promote hatred (against sex, gender, sexuality, race, religion, or any other protected category), such as various media companies.
I have worked on a website for the charitable giving of a Murdoch company. I regret this.
- Code that breaks just laws, such as privacy laws.
- Support political campaigns we don't agree with.
- Support organisations that take advantage of vulnerable people, such as gambling
I have worked on some changes for a CAM provider's website to remove claims they were ordered to remove. I regret this.
I'd welcome ideas for other changes I should make. Please reach out.
